BOO! IT'S HALLOWEEN

Okay, Monday was Halloween, so please indulge this great grandmother for one blog post.  Above is my great grandson Carter in his costume.  I think he's supposed to be a swamp person or zombie or something scary. Whatever, it is scary, which is what he wanted.

Here he is in full costume! His father brought him to my house.  Dad passed out candy to the neighborhood kids, while Carter and I walked around begging for candy.  What fun!

All the kids were so darn cute, but I had to ask this little girl to let me take a picture of her.  I asked her to explain her costumer to me and she said she was a VooDoo doll.  Note the pins sticking in her heart.  I wonder if her mother made this costumer.  It is adorable.

Now down to business:

QUILT BLOCK COOKBOOK BOM

The Wednesday group of the Quilt Block Cookbook BOM met at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.   Above some of the ladies show us their blocks that they made this past month.

 More showing of blocks.

 And more showing of blocks.

Cathy went over all the instructions.  When the Monday group met, I took copious notes and you can read about them here.  As apparent above, Cathy kept the women in stitches (pun intended) while going over the complicated directions.

As I said, the instructions for this block are a little tricky.  Above, some of the women discuss how to make this block.
This might help.  When making the section with the Y seam, place your squares as shown above.
You will know when you have done it correctly, if you fold back the one square before you make that diagonal stitching and it looks like this.  Hope these pictures help.  Cathy gave everyone her number in case you have questions.  PLEASE NOTE:  You may join our group at any time.  However, if you are a late comer, kits for previous blocks may not be available.  ALSO, all participants, please feel free to attend either the Monday night or Wednesday morning group.  It's okay to interchange.

Marjorie from Utah is following along with us.  Above is a picture of the block she made this month. Great job.  I like her color choices.

THESE BEES WANT A SALE!

Lee Anne was this month's queen when Bees In The Attic bee hive met this month at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Queen Lee Anne has declared that a sale should be held.   She announced that there is a Sale going on at the shop.  All fall fabric, fall patterns, fall books are on sale for 20% off now through Nov. 5!!

Another of her queenly duties was to sit while we all placed our blocks on the Queen's train.  The Block that Lee Anne had us make for her was Daisy Chain from the book Irish Chain Quilts.

This is a close up of all the blocks.  Lee Ann said she would make several more blocks to go with these.  I can't wait to see her finished quilt.  It is going to be wonderful!  Thanks so much to Lee Anne for supplying each of us working Bees with everything we needed to make this block.

Next up is Shirley S. who will be the Queen Bee next month.  Shirley has asked us to make the Breaking Up block also from the Irish Chain Quilts book.  We were reminded that this block is made up of an A and a B block in the book.  Shirley gave us nice fabric kits and instructions for completing our blocks.  She said this was a way for her to get her red, white, and blue quilt!

We also had some show-n-tell at the end of our meeting.  Barb showed us this adorable bag that she made.

This is a close up of Barb's bag.  I love the colors!

MADE A WREATH AT THE ATTIC WINDOW QUILT SHOP

Wouldn't you love to make one of these wreaths!  You can when you take a class with Diana at the Attic Window Quilt Shop on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 27.  You can make one in the beautiful autumn colored fabrics available at the shop.  Or make one for the Christmas Holidays out of some of that luscious Christmas fabric on the shelves now.   Call the shop to register and get a supply list.

When recently at the Attic Window Quilt Shop I saw some lovely quilts that students and teachers have made.  Above is this adorable quilt made by Julie Barnum using these lovely Halloween fabrics.

This is made by Vickie D.  It is called Yellow Brick road and has the most wonderful bright colored fabrics in it (and you can get them at the Attic Window).    Maybe she'll teach a class.

COOKBOOK BOM MEETS AT ATTIC WINDOW QUILT SHOP

The Quilt Block Cookbook BOM Monday evening group met at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Above, from left to right, Dawn, Vicky, Mary, Robin show us blocks they made this past month.

Cathy shows us the block we will be making this month.

According to Cathy's instructions, this sounds like a tricky block to make.  She told us what template we need to copy from the book we are using: The Quilt Block Cookbook by Amy Gibson.  Cathy cautioned us to make sure that our copy of the template is the exact size as in the book, and then add 1/4 inch around before cutting the paper.

Cathy also gave us a demonstration on paper piecing and cautioned us that there are two sets of rectangles in this pattern.  Make sure you are using the correct ones for this triangle paper pieced square that is in the corners of the block.

Cathy also showed us how to make the square with the Y seam.  Pretty complicated here too.

For those of you who did not attend Monday's meeting, be sure and come to the Wednesday group meeting on Oct. 26 at 11 a.m.  You won't want to miss any of this important information!  If you have not signed up for this BOM, you may still do so.  Just come to the Wednesday meeting and see what all the fun is about.

YOU TOO CAN MAKE THIS POUCH!

I've been wanting to make this wide open zipper pouch by Noodlehead for a long time.  This weekend I finally got busy and made it.  She has a wonderful step-by-step tutorial to help you make this bag.
I thought it would be nice for makeup, or maybe to keep my hexagons in, or maybe my latest applique project.  In fact, I think I will have to make more of these bags because I'm finding so many uses for them.

You can see how roomy it is inside and the wide mouth makes for easier access.  Check it out.  I bet someone on your Christmas list would like one of these.

ARE YOU MAKING BEE BLOCKS?

Are you up to date on making your Bee Blocks?  I've been busy this week trying to catch up.  Above is a block I made for Kat who is in one of the Bee Hives I belong to.   This block is Red Cross from the book Vintage Quilt Revival.  It is paper pieced.

This block is for Lee Anne, at another Bee Hive that I belong to at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  This applique block is called Daisy Chain and is from the book Irish Chain Quilts.  I think I may have done something wrong on this one.  I thought I knew how to applique and didn't read Lee Anne's directions.  Not good.  I'll be able to tell next Wednesday whether I have to do this block over or not.

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR...BOO!

I wanted to show you these two little Halloween Mug Rugs that I made for friends.  Every month, a couple long-time friends and I meet for lunch.  This month we celebrated my 92-year-old friend's birthday.  I thought these would help us celebrate.  Hope the women like them.

This is a closeup.  I had that cat fabric left over from when I made a shirt for my daughter years ago.  I just love scraps, don't you?

MAKING MUG RUGS

Hello quilters!  What are you working on?  Have you started gift making yet?  I haven't been all that productive but I did get some mug rugs completed.
 This is a closeup.
 Closeup of Mug Rug #2.
Closeup of Mug Rug #3.  Can you guess who they are going to?  My children, of course.  Yeah, MSU!  I had fabric left over from a quilt I made for my grandson a few years ago, and more fabric left over from the bags I recently made, so I thought, why not!  Now I'm off to the Attic Window Quilt Shop for more fabric for the next Christmas gift I will be making.  Hope to see you there!

A READER SHARES HER LATEST WORK

Marjorie, a reader in Utah, sent me this picture of her latest quilt.  This is what she said about it:

"I finished the 48 blocks today.  The original pattern was for 96 blocks.  I sewed the blocks on newspaper then removed it to put them on the design wall.  Some of the blocks were a little distorted on the edges but I was able to sew the same length borders on each side so I think it was not too uneven!!!  I did not get rid of many scraps.  After quilting I think I will do a scrappy binding.  I have started to do my bindings by machine unless the quilt is for judging at the fair."

Marjorie, I love your quilt.  What a great way to use up those scraps.  Since I saw your quilt, I've been going through my scrap pile and am now on a hunt for that black and white fabric.  I bet I can find some at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  I hope mine turns out as nicely as yours.  Thanks so much for sharing with us!!

FRIDAY FABRIC AT THE ATTIC WINDOW

It's that time of year when all the beautiful autumn colors are center front at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  I love seeing them.  Above is Frightful & Delightful by Henry Glass.  The two on the left glow in the dark!
These luscious fabrics are from Kanvas.  The line is Leaf In To Autumn.
Couldn't resist these fabrics.  The two on the right are from Andover Fabrics.  The line is The House that Jack Built.   The bolt of fabric on the left is from Henry Glass and called The Count.

While at the shop I noticed this new book with a collection of Halloween Mini Quilts.  Go on...do it...Celebrate the Season!

LEARN SHUTTLE TATTING AT THE ATTIC WINDOW QUILT SHOP

Have you ever wanted to learn how to do Tatting?  I remember watching my mother make the most beautiful doilies.  It seems that the ones I liked best were the ones she tatted.  Her shuttle would just fly.  She tried to teach me, but I could never get the hang of it.  We can learn now by taking Diana's beginning Shuttle Tatting class at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.

Diana's Beginning Shuttle Tatting class is Friday, October 14 from 10 a.m. to noon.  Above is what you will learn to make.  It is amazing to me!  Call the shop to register and get a supply list.
