READY FOR A SPRING FLING?

Isn't this bed runner gorgeous!  I love the fabrics.  Above is the quilt that Chris made for the 7th Annual Spring Fling Shop Hop.  Have you purchased your passport  yet?  Each shop made a project for the hop. Check out the various patterns and kits available at the different shops.  Passports can be purchased for $5 at any shop.  Visit the shop to sign up for a drawing and receive a free pattern.  At the end of the shop hop there will be a drawing for a sewing machine from completed passports.  Participating shops are:  Attic Window Quilt Shop; Calico Creations (South Haven); Custom Quilts Unlimited (Fennville); Pressing Matters Quilt Shoppe (Holland); Queen Bee Quilt Shoppe (Grand Rapids); So South Haven (South Haven).
While at the shop, take a look at Marilyn’s new My Paris Travel Bag.  The pattern is by Fig Tree & Co.  Check out how big it is!
Marilyn also made this adorable little girl skirt.  The pattern comes in sizes 3 – 10.  You will receive a free pattern with the purchase of the fabrics at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.

IN CASE YOU HAVEN’T HEARD:
  • THE QUILTER’S ROAD TRIP is the month of April.  Twelve Shops are participating.  Passports are $5.  Each shop chose a different month for its wallhanging.  Chris chose January because she loves snowmen.  Secretly she’s afraid we’ll all be made at her for choosing snowmen since we are so sick of snow here in Michigan.  I don’t think she needs to worry because that snowman is so darn cute!  Patterns and kits are available for purchase.

TWO TALENTED WOMEN TO TELL YOU ABOUT

Recognize this lady with the cute smile on her face?  I’d like to introduce you to Bev. S.  You've probably seen her before as she comes to lots of events at the Attic Window.  When I first saw her picture recently on the Mamacjt blog, which is on my sidebar, I thought, “I know that lady.”  Then I told myself, no, impossible.  It wasn’t until I saw Bev recently at the Applique Bee that I realized I was correct!  Bev had written Carol who is the author of the Mamacjt blog, sent her a picture, and commissioned her to make a quilt portrait for her.  Carol is well known for her fantastic work.  This is #70 of these portraits.  Notice how she captured the touch of gray in Bev's hair.  Bev said she doesn't wear her glasses on her nose like that, but Carol does that so you can see the eyes.  Bev also likes the cute little button necklace.   If you are interested in getting your portrait done, you can contact Carol for information.  I think Carol did a wonderful job of capturing Bev’s smiling face, don’t you?  This is so darn cute!

Bev also brought this little quilt to show me.  A couple of years ago when I was participating in the Monday Modern Quilt Along at 42 Quilts, I decided to make the quilt for my grandson who loves the color orange.  You can see the finished quilt here.   However, I had this one flower block that I didn’t think he would like in the quilt.  When I posted about it on my blog, Michele Bilyeu of the With Heart and Hands blog saw the post and suggested that if I didn’t want the block, I could send it to her and she would use it to make a small quilt to be auctioned off at the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI).   I sent the block to her along with some of the other pieces of fabric that I had used in my Modern Quilt and Michele made this darling little quilt, which she put up for auction.  You can learn more about AAQI here.  I love Michele’s blog.  She seems like such a caring and loving person and I was happy to do this.  In fact when I saw the little quilt that she made, I thought I’d buy it.  However, Bev beat me to it.  She brought it to the Bee to show me.  It was so nice to see it in person and so kind of Bev to contribute to such a worthy cause.  Thanks Bev for sharing all these lovely items.

You can see the before and after pictures of this little quilt here.  A special thanks also to Michele.  She is one talented lady.

THE MOD SQUAD HAS LOTS OF SHOW-N-TELL

The Mod Squad (otherwise known as the Modern Bee) met recently at the Attic Window.  Last month we asked members to make 12 1/2" unfinished blocks to be used in a charity quilt.  Above is Diana's block.
This is Lee Ann's block.
This is Marti's block.
 This is Cathy's block.

This is Caroll's (me) block.

I loved all of these blocks and think they are going to make a unique and interesting modern quilt.  We were glad to see Adrienne back from her trip out of country.  However, some of our members were missing this week due to illness or travel or other commitments.  For those who are still interested in participating in this quilt, feel free to bring your blocks to the meeting next month.
Above, Marti works on her project for the day.  I had to show you this because I think it is so interesting that we are a Modern Bee and most of the women brought old featherweight machines to sew on.  They swear they are the best!
This is the strip quilt that Marti was working on.  Love the fabrics and the interesting pattern.
Marti also showed us this darling quilt that she made for the Linus Project.  Adorable!
Claire, a new member of the group worked on this gorgeous Irish Chain.
Diana worked on making these delightful fussy cut wonky blocks.  Can't wait to see the finished quilt.
I worked on some paper piecing.  When I found this beautiful fabric I thought it would lend itself well to the pattern.  The jury is still out on what I'll do with it.

ARE YOU AN APPLIQUE ADDICT?

The Attic Window was a busy place when the Applique Bee met recently.  There was lots of gabbing and show-n-tell.  Above is the Sycamore Rose block that Judie M. was working on.
I wanted to show you this jacket that Judie also made.  It is made from old blue jeans and adorned with appliqué.  Wonderful!
Above is Cathy M’s Table Runner.  The pattern is from the book Skinny Quilts by Kim Schaefer.  So cute!
Cathy gave us a demonstration as to how she does her appliqué using aluminum foil.
Above she shows us how she pulls the foil around the freezer paper template.  First she makes the freezer paper template, irons it onto the fabric, leaves about a fourth inch of fabric around the template.  She then applies starch to the fourth inch of fabric and pulls the foil around the template, bringing the fabric with it.
She then irons the edge, making a nice crease in the fabric.  Cathy says she uses heavy duty foil for this technique.
Above is the perfect circle that she made during the demonstration.  A special thank you to Cathy for showing us how to do this.
This is the Sycamore Rose block that Nancy is working on.  Nancy uses the fuze and machine appliqué technique.  Great job!
Diane made this very modern looking quilt called Reverse Psychology.  The pattern is from the book Quilt Batik by Cheryl Brown.  I think Diane should come to the Mod Squad meetings too!
Above is Erma’s Youth Quilt.  The pattern called “One For The Boys” is from a magazine but she forgets which one.  Cute quilt!

WHO READS TO YOU?

I think this is so precious, I had to show it you.  My daughter took her four-year-old grandson (my great grandson)  to visit my 96-year-old mom.  While there, Carter read to his great great grandmother.  Isn't this cute?  He's just learning to read and really puts his all into it.  I think this picture should be used as an ad for reading, or for books.  You are never too old to enjoy reading or being read to.

A STITCH-IN WITH A LITTLE HUMOR

Val showed us the above block during a Stitch-In at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  She said this is block one with 99 to go!  She is making this quilt for her husband Dave.  The quilt is called 9-11 Quilt and is by Laundry Basket Quilts.  I admire her beautiful work!
Judi looks serious as she works on her appliqué.  However, laughs were sprinkled throughout the day.
Somehow the topic got onto Judi’s height.  When Rosa asked Judi how tall she is, Judi said it depended on whether she was at Weight Watchers or not.  That brought laughter from us all.
Dorothy was working on these bright yellow blocks.  Can’t wait to see this quilt.
Diana was busy blocking her diamonds for the Lone Star Spiral quilt.  I struggle with piecing and after trying unsuccessfully to make my diamonds using the technique Vicky (teacher) showed us, I decided to ask Diana for help.  She taught me the special technique she used to get her seams to line up so precisely.  Didn’t work for me.   Judi tried to help.  I still couldn’t get those seams to match.  Finally I asked Chris for help.  After 7 ½ hours I had the eight diamonds basted together.  Thanks everyone for all your help!!!
Diana also showed us this Irish crochet that she is doing.  Note the dime at the top next to the little flower.  I cannot fathom how she does such small, intricate work.  It is stunning.
Rosa is all serious here as she works on the lining for her bag.

There was just too much soberness for me so I had to tell them a little story about my neighbor’s kid.  I think he is about six.  One day my neighbor looked over her son’s shoulder to see what he was drawing.  There was a large circle on the page with several odd shapes inside the circle.  She admired his skills.  His hand-eye coordination had improved.  She recognized what he had drawn.  With great confidence she complimented him on his drawing of the Earth.  The child looked up at her with that expression that only a little boy can give his mother.  “That’s not the Earth,” he said.  “It’s a toilet bowl.”

Kids, you gotta love em!

BLOCK #2 OF IN REMEMBERANCE

Block #2 is ready to be stitched.  This appliqué block is from the book El Camino Real.  I previously blogged about it here.  I don’t think I’ll be making the entire quilt, but do want to make three blocks and the two borders and make it as a bed runner.    I’ll probably be doing the stitching when the Applique Bee meets next Tuesday, March 25th from 1-4 at the Attic Window Quilt Shop

In the meantime, don’t forget that the Modern Bee meets Wednesday, March 26th from 10-4

HAVE YOU MADE A T-SHIRT QUILT?

We enjoyed some show-n-tell last Saturday while Rosa and I were making our bags at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Above, Jill shows us this T-shirt quilt that she made.
Of course I was busy sewing and didn’t write down who the quilt is for, but it looks the girl went to Catholic Central.
I do remember that Jill said the young woman is now in college.  Isn’t this a darling block!
Carolyn E. stopped by the shop to pick up some fabric to go with this quilt that she is making for her grandson in Florida.
This is a close up of the quilt.  It looks like Carolyn is doing this entire quilt with English Paper Piecing.

SALE! SALE! SALE!

No, Gene is not for sale.  I’ll tell you about the sale in a minute.  First I’d like to introduce you to Gene.  Gene is Lee Ann’s husband (see Lee Ann on yesterday's post) and is the handsome man who makes beautiful quilts for charity.
This is one of Gene’s quilts.  You can see three others that he made here (scroll down).  As you can probably surmise from the photo I took, I had to catch Gene off guard to get a picture of him.  We’ve tried to get him to join us while stitching at the Attic Window Quilt Shop, however, he prefers to do his stitching at home.  Whatever he decides I hope he will continue to make his beautiful quilts!  Thank you, Gene!!

Now, about that SALE!!!   THE SPRING CLEAN-UP SALE is Thursday, March 20th through Saturday, March 22nd.  You will want to take advantage of this stupendous sale!   A little birdie told me Chris was adding more bolts of fabric to the sale table.  Gotta get there early!

THIS BAG LADY KNOWS HER STUFF!

This past Saturday I attended Lee Ann’s Strip Street Bag class at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Above, is Lee Ann our excellent teacher.  This pattern is by Quilted Memories Designs.  If you want to know how to make a bag, Lee Ann is the one to show you how!
It was a fun day as Rosa and I teased each other as we worked on our bags.  Above is Rosa with her bag.  I love her colors on the bottom of the bag and the black and white fabric across the top.  So cute!
This bag was easy to make and we were able to finish it during class.  Above is my finished bag.  My fabric on the bottom of the bag is different from what the pattern calls for because I used left over strips from when I strip pieced my pink quilt.  Actually, I’m still working on that quilt and love the pink fabrics so much and had plenty of them that I decided to use them in my bag.
The bag size is approximately 15" X 20".  Above, I placed a plastic project box in the bag to give you an idea of the bag's size.  As I said before, a woman can’t have too many bags!  I love it!

IN THE MEANTIME DON'T FORGET:

MEET KATHY AT THE ATTIC WINDOW QUILT SHOP

The next time you stop in at the Attic Window Quilt Shop you might see this smiling face.  I’d like to introduce you to Kathy Bagin, who will be helping out for a while at the shop.  Kathy has been quilting for years.  Some of you may remember her from years ago when she and Sally (former owner of AW) had the Sewing Bird.  Kathy is in a Bee and said she loves wools and loves to cook.  Say Hi! to Kathy the next time you visit the shop.  BTW, Kathy is holding the new bag that Lee Ann made.  Don’t you love it!
During Happy Scrappers on Wednesday, Peggy showed her latest quilt.  She calls this her Kaffee quilt, although it does have some other fabrics in other than just Kaffee.  It is a stunning quilt.
This is a close up of the blocks and the quilting.
And look at this back!  I believe this is a Kaffee fabric and is so beautiful that it makes this quilt reversible.
This quilt was started in a Bee.  Each member put five fat quarters in a bag.  The bags were placed on a table and each person chose a bag.  That person was to make a quilt using the fat quarters it the bag plus other fabrics and give that quilt to her Secret Sister at Christmas.  Dianne V. was the recipient of this beautiful quilt.
The quilt was made by Carol Kuipers and includes a lot of Dutch fabrics that she got in Amsterdam.  Carol also crotchet these darling doilies for the quilt.  What a lovely quilt.
