I LOVE A TREE HUGGER

I fell in love with this fabric when I was at the Attic Window Quilt Shop on Saturday.  It is called Tree Huggers and is by Studio E.  Aren't those little critters just the cuttest?  The fabric on the left has rows of lady bugs marching along.  Click on the picture for a closer view.
This is a close up of the green fabric.  These little animals are darling and I have to make something out of this fabric for my great grandson.
How cute is this!  Stop in at the shop and pick up your fabric before it's gone!

KNOTTY GIRLS ARE BEING KNOTTY AGAIN

The Knotty Girls met recently at the Attic Window Quilt Shop, to do some stripping.  We had some show and tell first.  Marcy showed us this beautiful quilt top that she made for her daughter.   I love twilling and really like how she has used a different color of thread for each block.  That fabric she used for the sashings is perfect and made the twilling colors pop!

This is a close up of one of the blocks.  Marcy had three blocks left over and is making a table runner out of them.  She has one lucky daughter!

This is the Twilling top that Sherri made using green thread.  I can’t imagine the amount of work these women put into this project.  Isn’t it awesome?

Sherri showed us a darling bag she made for her niece.  I love those bright colors.
Sue L. is working on another project that takes a lot of time. This rug-hooking project will be beautiful when completed.

The Knotty Girls also did some stripping…exchanged strips for the Edyta Sitar pattern that we are going to make. Maggie and I are going to do some stripping of our on.  Well, really we are going to do some further exchanging as we have opposite tastes.  What I like she is giving to me and in return she will get what she likes and I don’t. Sounds like a good deal to me!

DON’T FORGET:

HEART OF WINTER TOUR takes place Saturday, February 12. I hope I get to go as I've heard these bus trips are so much fun.  Besides, I'm sick of being cooped up in the house.  Winter in Michigan can be unpredictable at best.  Why worry about the weather or driving on ice and snow.  Let the bus driver do all the worrying while you sit back, relax, and think about all the fabric you want to buy.  For more information, call the shop ASAP.

I saw this on the Quilting Board. Click here and get seven free New York Beauty Block Patterns.

NOW IS THE TIME TO THINK AHEAD

I finished my first project for Allie’s (of Allie-Oops Sweet Happy Life) Christmas Through The Year. Our goal is to finish one project a month and get a head start on our gift making.

This pattern, titled May Flowers, is a 6” by 22” wallhanging and is from Patch Abilities. It is perfect for a little nook in my sewing room, but I’m putting it in my “2011 Christmas Presents” basket. I hope it stays there. Be sure to visit Allie’s blog here and see the other ideas people are coming up with in order to get their Christmas gifts completed on time and avoid that last minute rush. You can participate too and join in the fun. By participating you will also be entered into her give-away. The nice part about Allie’s program is that you don’t have to commit to anything. You can enter this month and maybe not next, but enter again another month. Thanks, Allie, for getting us to think ahead.

This is the last week for the SNOW DAYS OF JANUARY at the Attic Window Quilt Shop. You’ll want to take advantage of the sale and pick up your gift.

LET'S CELEBRATE LIFE!

Recently I found a new blog, Em Celebrates. The other day when I was visiting, I left a comment. Several days later, I was notified that I had won the give-away. I didn’t know about the give-away. I left a comment because I think her blog is cute and her post that day touched me. Today I received this wonderful book from Em. Her enclosed card said, “Celebrating me and you and life!! Enjoy the beauty, Em” Em, I thank you so much and am looking forward to reading this book. Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place by Terry Tempest Williams, says on the back that it is “A record of loss, healing grace, and the search for a human place in nature’s large design.” Sounds deep and thought provoking. Thank you Em for this beautiful gift!

Are you wondering what I have the book laying on? What is beneath the book? I’m such a tease. I’ve been working on this project all weekend and had to show a little of what I’ve done. It’s for my Great Grand Son, and I’ll show it all to you when I’m finished.

Can you believe this week is the last full week in January! Yikes! Where did the month go? There is a lot going on at the Attic Window Quilt Shop this week. Monday is UFO day and a great time to finish one of the multitudes of UFOs you have stashed. On the other hand, you can go make a toothbrush rug. You can also attend Julie’s class and learn to make one of her beautiful dolls! Check out the classes on the sidebar. One of these will help you get out of those winter doldrums.

MAKE FRIENDS WITH A FRIENDSHIP BRIAD

A group of women met last night at the Attic Window Quilt Shop to learn how to make a Friendship Braid Quilt.  This is a fun quilt to make but can be a little bit tricky in the construction.  Above Chris (storeowner) shows Chris (student) how to use the new tool that makes cutting of these Trapezoids much easier and faster.

After sorting our fabrics into lights and darks, the cutting began.  These women were concentrating on cutting and didn’t realize I was taking pictures.  Cutting is tricky, especially if you are not using the new tool that Chris demonstrated.  You have to place your fabrics just right and remember which way you are to turn your ruler as you move along the strip of fabric.  I remember that I cut several pieces too short or at the wrong angle when I first made this quilt.  I ended up putting those pieces in the scrappy border.
Above, left to right: Emily, Betsy, Maryellen, Chris, Tari, Cathy and Jan. Here you can see the progress we made during the evening. We used the Friendship Braid pattern from the book Jelly Roll Quilts. We needed to get started on two different braids, as each is slightly different and alternates throughout the quilt. As I looked at them, I thought about the title of this quilt: Friendship Braid. What a wonderful way to make friends, getting together to sew and share. The women made great progress last night and I made some new friends.  Aren't quilters the best!

A SINCERE FORM OF FLATTERY

I was visiting Mamacjt’s blog the other day and saw a piece similar to the one above.  I love Carol’s blog and wish I had her talent. She is so creative and I hope she will produce patterns for us who are less imaginative. Since I am in the process of upgrading my bathroom, which will be black and white, I thought a piece similar to what Carol did would be a perfect accent. Therefore, I got busy and made my own (picture above). It’s not exactly like Carol’s, but close. My scrappy squares are square and Carol's are rectangle. I still have to practice my French knots and make them in a straight line, and get rid of some of the blue pen marks, and try to figure out why her piece looks so crisp and clean compared to mine.

This is a close up of my project.  You will notice one thing missing. On Carol’s piece, she accented it with little black squares. As you can see, I have not added them yet. I want to, but Carol said she did them with Micron pen and I’m just too afraid to attempt that until I practice on some scrap pieces. I know I have a long way to go before I can produce anything nearly as perfect as what Carol does, but it was fun trying. Be sure and check out Mamacjt’s blog frequently. The link is on my sidebar. You will love what she does.

MORE SOCKS AND MOM STORY

I’ve been busy making more socks for Mary Lou’s Sock Swap. I know they look like the ones I posted the other day, but they are not. I tried some new things, like making the heel a different color, adding some appliqué, and making short fat ones and long skinny ones. After all, we all don’t have the same shape legs! I have most of my 18 blocks done and am now anxious to see how we put these together as they are various sizes. I love Mary Lou’s designs so I’m sure it will be wonderful. I’ll keep you posted.

Mom – Though I’m retired, I’ve been filling in at work while someone is off on sick leave. I only work from 8-noon. When I came home the other day, Mother started in. “Let’s go out to eat. We haven’t been out to eat in some time.” (We went out to eat two days ago).

I said, “We talked about this yesterday. We are going out to eat at the end of the week.”

I got a blank stare from her, so I continued, “Besides it is snowing and I’m not leaving the house again today.”

For the rest of the afternoon, every ten minutes she asked, “Should I put my coat on?”

Then she brought her coat into the kitchen and put it on a chair near the back door. “Are you ready yet?”

No matter what I said about staying home, and complained about the snow, she continued to insist that we go out to eat. When I saw her in her bedroom putting on high heels, I gave up.

“Where do you want to go?” I asked her. “What do you want to eat?”

“I want a hamburger, fries, and one of those Frosty things.” I was surprised that she was so quick to say what she wanted. She further surprised me by adding, “It’s snowing, why don’t we just go and get the food and bring it back here.”

Sounded good to me.  I held my breath as I got her and her high heels into the car. We drove up to Wendy’s drive-through window, Mom leaned over and said, “I’ll have spaghetti, a cup of coffee, and a piece of apple pie with ice cream.”

I don’t know who was more stunned, me or the order taker who was saying, “W..what?”

I had planned on staying on my diet and just get a salad. Instead, I ordered us both hamburgers, fries and big Frosty’s and hurried home.

KNOTTY GIRLS MEETING

The Knotty Girls Stitching Bee met at the end of December at the Attic Window Quilt Shop, but so much has been going on that I haven’t posted the pictures.  Above is the Sue Spargo Christmas BOM that Phyllis is working on.  I love the colors, and aren’t those red birds lined up across the bottom just the right touch!
Sherri is working on this piece from the book Wool Crazy by Jo Ann Mullay.  Another wonderful project by Sherri.  I love the rich colors and how Sherri adds her special stitchery to the piece.  I have got to learn how to work with wool!
Cindy showed this beautiful gift she received from a friend.  She said the friend knows she likes cats so she made her this wall hanging out of Laurel Burch cat fabrics.  Cindy is one lucky lady to have such a thoughtful and talented friend. It is truly a "bounty of bliss and blessings, a treasure trove of treats."

MUG RUG FOR YOU!

Remember when I told you about the tutorial that Barb of Bejeweled Quilts had?   I made this mug rug from her tutorial.  I’m planning on giving it to Allie of Allie Ooops Sweet Happy Life as one of her Christmas Through The Winter give-aways. I'm such a slob and this little mat really protects my table.  I love Barb's pattern,  Have you had a chance to think about starting in on next year's Christmas gifts?  I'm thinking about them because I sure don't want to go through that last minute rush like I did this year.  Check out Allie's blog.  There is nothing to commit to.  You can hop in and out as you please.  You just link to her blog during her post at the end of the month and get a chance to win the give-aways.  Check her blog often as she has links to tutorials and patterns too.

This is a close up of the mat.  The pattern is so easy and these fabrics add a touch of color to brighten up these dull winter days.

HOW ABOUT A SOCK HOP?

Oops, I mean a sock swap. I’m participating in Mary Lou Weidman’s Sock Swap and these are my first attempts at doing a Hoochy Mama and making a sock block. If you haven’t taken a class from Mary Lou, you might not understand what “Hoochy” means. You’ll have to get one of her fabulous books to learn how to do it. One of the steps in her sock pattern is to “Hoochy” the heel. I adore Mary Lou’s patterns and if you haven’t seen her beautiful quilts, check out her link on my sidebar where you can also keep updated on her quilts and what she’s up to. She’s creative and inspiring. The Hippie Quilt she has on her blog today is a must-see. It is a hoot and sure brings back memories.

This is a close up of one of my socks. As you may know, I’m not fond of piecing. Other than the fact that my seams never match and my blocks are never square, I also get bored doing the same thing over and over again. Mary Lou’s technique is not boring. You stay engaged because when you hoochy this and hoochy that you must decide where to do it. You don’t have to worry about anything matching either. I’m really not sure if I’m doing this right, but I’m having fun playing with fabrics. I’m anxious to see what others in the group are doing. I might have to make some adjustments or start all over, which will be fine because these blocks are a snap to make. I want to do some more of her free piecing and plan to try a flower power border next (get her Flower Power book and see what I’m talking about). Also, scroll down on her sidebar to where she asks you to “come and join people who love whimsical quilts and friendship with quilters.” It’s a great group.

AROUND THE WORLD QUILTING BEE ROUND 2

Looking at this block makes me want to shout Happy New Year!  It is just one of the beautiful blocks I received from those participating in the Around The World Quilting Bee – Christmas.
These are all of the blocks I received. (Click on the picture for a closer look) They came from Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, and in the United States: MA, NC, IL, WA, and CA. Thanks to all of you. I love every block and wish I could post an individual picture of each one. They are all so darn cute! Unfortunately, my quilt never did get to Mel so I missed out on her lovely feathered star. I saw some of the others she made and they were awesome. I’m not sure how many others I missed out on. I chose to have my quilt sent to me because it was just taking too long and I got the feeling some of those participating just weren’t interested any more. I was afraid my quilt would get lost somewhere along the way, so I asked that what was done be sent to me. I think I’ll make a couple more blocks to add to these and then start thinking about what sashing and border fabrics I’m going to use. It will take me awhile to get all that done. A special thanks goes out to Jane of Jane’s Fabrics for all her work and effort in keeping us inspired, on track and moving along during this past year. Jane you are a jewel!

MOM - My 93-year-old mother still suffers under the delusion that a woman is nothing without a man.

I’m having some work done on the upstairs bathroom. Yesterday, the contractor came by the house to take measurements. He’s tall, handsome, and young enough to be my grandson (almost). He always greets Mother with a big smile, which sets her to giggling and plying him with offers of food.

“How about a cup of coffee and a cookie?” she said. He ate a cookie and talked to her for a few minutes then just as he was getting ready to leave, she hurried into the living room, brought back a box of candy that she’d been given for her birthday and made him eat a couple pieces while she giggled and looked around for more temptations.

After he left, she said to me, “Well, you certainly made a good impression on him.”

I wasn’t sure if she was being sarcastic, so I said, “You are the one making the impression, sharing your candy with him.”

She smiled that sly little smile of hers and roller her eyes. “You stick with me kid, I’ll show you how it’s done.”
*********************************************

Year Long Christmas - Feeling exhausted, run down after that last minute chaos of the before Christmas sewing rush? You may not want to even think about next Christmas right now, but Allie of Allie Ooops Sweet Happy Life has just the cure to keep that from happening next year. I know I’m sick of that last minute sewing chaos just before Christmas each year and have vowed not to let it happen again. I’m joining Allie’s Year Long Christmas event to help me stay on track and get those presents done long BEFORE next Christmas. Really, if you just do one a month you will at least have 12 gifts finished by the end of the year. Allie will have free downloads, links to special projects you can make, and a give-away each month. You can read about it here, then on January 5th, stop over (link is on my sideboard) and sign up for this fun event. If you don’t feel like doing it this month (still recuperating from this last mad rush) you can sign up any time as the event will remain open all year long.

You might even want to start your first project with this: The Nobel Wife has a cute stitchery pattern for you. Check it out.

PS:  I just learned that First Saturday Bee and Sampler will be held this Saturday instead of last Saturday because of the New Year Sale.

STARTING THE NEW YEAR OFF RIGHT!

If you didn’t make it to the Attic Window Quilt Shop on New Year’s Day you missed out on a wonderful sale! The place was jam-packed with everyone looking for that special fabric, pattern, or book. It was like old home week as people were chatting like crazy and hugging someone they hadn’t seen in a while. What a fun day it was! What made it the most fun was this…..

I met Stephanie of Peas in A Pod (that's her on the left). She is my new BBF (Blogging Best Friend). She came up all the way from Kalamazoo to take part in the sale and for us to meet. That was so sweet of her. We’ve been corresponding over this past year and it was so nice to finally put a face with the e-mails. I wish I had gotten a picture of her daughter too, but Sweet Pea was playing in the back. The shop has a small area full of lots of toys to entertain children while their mother shops. Sweet Pea is a cutie and so mature for her age.

I had suggested that we all have coffee after shopping but the shop got so busy that I was volunteered to help and didn’t get to go. I’m dying to get to know Stephanie better and to sit down and have a real conversation with her. I want to know more about her visit with Edyta Sitar and if she has started that quilt. I want to know how she likes her new iron. I want to know more about her gadget cozies and is she still making dolls. There are a million things I want to talk to her about as I feel as though I‘ve known her for years. She’s that comfortable to be around. I know Stephanie had a couple other stops to make while in Grand Rapids, so I stayed behind.  I intend to get down to her area soon so we can catch up and share blogging and quilting ideas. Stephanie, thanks so much for making the trip to GR. I hope we can get together again soon.

On another note:  Are you like me, ready to get back to some kind of routine? Before Christmas, when all the decorating was happening, my friend Susan said she wasn’t doing any decorating this year. She was going to her kid’s homes and no one was coming to her house so she just saw no reason to decorate.

I, in all my smugness, told her that I was decorating. I did it for ME.

What a load of crap! As I ran up and down the stairs putting away all my Christmas decorations, I knew Susan was right. I’m getting to old for this. No one came to my house during the holidays. I was the only one who saw those decorations, and I vowed right then and there, next year will be different. I may put up my tree. How much effort does that take to plop the tree upright, push down the branches, plug in the lights (it came pre-strung with lights), and hang a few bulbs. But nothing else. NOTHING!  I can enjoy all the decorations at my kids and friends houses.

Oh, look… snowmen. January is snowmen month, isn't it.  Maybe just a few....on the walls/doors, just sitting around....

Blog of Note:  Several times during the holidays I was looking for something cute and clever to put my rolls/muffins in. Well no more just plopping them in a basket and covering with a napkin. I’ve found this clever idea and intend to make several. Gingercake has a vintage inspired dinner roll holder. Check it out.
